Pfizer, the pharmaceutical company that developed Viagra (sildenafil), has (MHRA) to reclassify it's erectile dysfunction (ED) medication from a mental health condition, the company has advised the public. This will reportedly result in a black box warning from the MHRA (“BorderleyWARNING”).
The agency said the agency is conducting a full investigation to identify any adverse events, in particular those related to the formulation of the medication.
The MHRA has recommended revoking the reclassification of Viagra (sildenafil), and it has also recommended exempting some men from the black box warning.
The MHRA has also advised the public that “the availability of generic versions of the drug may result in additional warnings”.
The agency added that it was “unfortunate” for the public to be unaware of the agency’s advice.
The MHRA is now advising the public to consult with their healthcare provider “if they believe that Viagra may be an effective treatment for ED”.
The MHRA said it was working with a specialist mental health professional, to assess whether reclassification was medically appropriate.
The MHRA said it was working with a specialist mental health professional, to assess whether the public was informed of the agency’s advice.
It added that the public should be cautious about taking the drug.
The MHRA had earlier advised consumers to avoid taking the drug for “some reason”, or “the effects can be severe”.
This advice was not effective for those with ED, and there was no mention of the agency’s advice in the reclassification draft for Viagra (sildenafil) in June 2013.
The agency added that those advising reclassification would be advised to consult with their doctor and, if they had any concerns, the MHRA would be able to advise.
A separate statement from Pfizer (MHRA) said the MHRA was investigating whether Viagra, which was launched in 2003, was “already unsuitable for the public in a clinical trial”.
The agency added that its investigation was “not yet complete”, but it was working with a specialist mental health professional to assess whether reclassification was medically appropriate.
Pfizer has also advised the public that “the availability of generic versions of the drug may result in additional warnings”.
The MHRA recommended reclassifying the drug as a mental health condition, with the added recommendation that “the risk of side effects may be greater in men over the age of 40”.
The agency also advised the public to consult with their doctor, or a specialist mental health professional, if they had any concerns.
The MHRA advised consumers to not take the drug for “some reason”.
The MHRA also advised patients to consult with their doctor and, if they had any concerns, the MHRA would be able to advise.
